Lexical Resource Knowledge for IELTS Exam

Among the four criteria set for the scoring of the IELTS writing task, Lexical Resource is one of them. It basically focuses on the vocabulary range which is used by the candidate. Moreover, the Lexical resources are also used in the scoring of the speaking section. The main reason the lexical resource is used for the scoring purpose of the speaking and writing sections is that in both of the modules you have to express your ideas and thoughts. And here the difficulty arises when you have to think of a proper vocabulary to put your thoughts in the words. So, keep in mind that the more wide range of vocabulary you use, the more you score well in both of the modules.

The meaning of the lexical resource is vocabulary. Always try that you add good vocabulary words in the writings that are most uncommon and unusual. For example, you can write cutting-technology instead of using the word modern technology in your writings. However, neither consider lexical resource as a rocket science nor think that you have to use very fancy words to impress the examiner. Just keep in mind that you have to use sufficient vocabulary according to the topic.

Understanding of the Lexical Resource for an IELTS Exam

The examiner scoring your writings will want you to write a variety of vocabulary words that are very accurate according to the topic. Moreover, these vocabulary words should express what you want to say. So, you must keep in mind the tips to influence the person scoring your test.

  • Do not Repeat Words

While writing or speaking in the IELTS test make sure you do not use the same words again and again as they can cost you marks. Try not to use common verbs, adjectives, and nouns. For example, if you used a word growing in the sentence then do not use that similar word in other sentences. In contrary to this you can use words like burgeoning or increasing. So, keep in mind that you should know synonyms to the words as this impresses the examiner and you can get a good score. Moreover, there are very advanced synonyms available for the different range of words that you can use and influence the examiner.

  • Refrain yourself from Copying the Words

One of the tips to get a good score in IELTS writing is that you should not copy the words from the question as it will cost you marks. If you copy the words, then the examiner does not thinks of you as a good writer and develops a bad impression about you. So, try to refrain from copying the words as you can always use synonyms.

  • Every word should not be Paraphrased:

Candidates have to admit that they cannot always paraphrase every word. Many words have synonyms but keep in mind that you cannot always use synonyms as a substitute for the words. You have to be careful about this because not all synonyms have exactly the same meanings nor all of the synonyms can be used in all contexts. So, always use those synonyms about which you are very sure that it fits properly in the sentence.

  • Use Collocation:

Use of Collocation impresses the examiner as it displays that your language skills are good. Moreover, it helps the candidate to demonstrate the thoughts very easily. It is crisp, very concise and looks very natural. However, to be an expert in the collocation you need to practice a lot as this is the thing you can not master overnight. You can get very good scores if you have an idea that which words you should place in the sentences to make it a proper one.

  • Vocabulary related to the Topic:

The variety of vocabulary you use in your writings shows that you have a grip on the language. In order to show the range of vocabulary, you have to show the examiner some words that are topic-related. So, make an effort to learn some words associated with industries and different fields, as this will help you to gain a good score. For example, if you are given a topic related to medicine to write an essay on it, then you should use words like disease, cure, prescription, heal, etc.
